A thought-provoking look at AI, human cognition, and the questions we still struggle to answer.
From intelligent systems to conscious machines—are we crossing a line, or just drawing one?
When I learned that my CIT ‘83 batchmate, V. Manohar, had bought a hard copy of my book, AI for the Rest of Us: Click, Create, Succeed!, on Amazon, I was thrilled. Seeing him hold it with a thoughtful smile warmed my heart. But what followed was even more exciting—a conversation that challenged our understanding of intelligence itself.
This article is the second in my ongoing series on AI. If you haven’t yet, do check out the first one: How I Got the Perfect AI-Generated Visual—Without a Design Team—a hands-on case study in prompt engineering for small businesses, authors, and marketers navigating tight budgets.
Manohar, always curious, posed a question that has perplexed scientists, engineers, and philosophers for decades: Can AI truly think? He pointed to Apple’s recent study, The Illusion of Thinking, which tested advanced AI models on classic puzzles like the Tower of Hanoi and River Crossing. The findings? AI performs well on simple tasks but collapses when faced with complex ones, revealing a major gap in reasoning abilities. This led us to the fundamental question:
The Mystery of Thinking
What does it mean to think?
For centuries, scientists and philosophers have debated this, often linking it to consciousness—a concept we still struggle to define. If thinking itself remains an enigma for human minds, how can we demand a clear answer for AI?
Rather than looking at thinking as a binary—either "AI can" or "AI can’t"—we should ask: How does AI’s problem-solving compare to human cognition? If a chess grandmaster and a supercomputer both excel at chess, who is the better "thinker"? Neither fully understands the other’s “mind,” yet both succeed through different methods.
AI vs. Humans: Strengths and Limits
Both AI and humans rely on pattern recognition, but their strengths and weaknesses differ:
AI thrives in speed and scale. Google Maps instantly calculates the fastest route—a task that would take us hours with a paper map.
Humans excel in emotional depth, creativity, and adaptability. A poet can craft a verse inspired by a sunset, while AI might struggle to convey genuine emotion.
However, AI’s “thinking” is bound by programming, while the human brain rewires itself dynamically. If I learn painting, my brain restructures itself based on practice, age, and even my environment. AI, however, depends on its creators’ predefined rules. Interestingly, collective programming often outshines individual AI developers, much like how a well-coordinated team surpasses a lone strategist.
The Evolution of AI—A Tool, Not a Replacement
AI isn’t perfect, but neither are we. Progress happens incrementally:
The first car wasn’t as advanced as today’s electric vehicles.
DOS evolved into Windows 11.
Antibiotics revolutionized medicine but aren't flawless solutions.
Everything—from the sun’s sunspots to the moon’s dark side—exists in duality. AI is no different. It has limitations, but also immense potential. Instead of rejecting AI for not thinking like humans, we should focus on maximizing its strengths while managing its weaknesses.
That’s why my book opens with this guiding principle: “Think with AI, not for AI.” We should harness AI as a tool that enhances our thinking, not replaces it. My book offers 20 AI hacks and 9+ hands-on activities to help you understand AI’s capabilities and use them to your advantage.
Beyond the AI Thinking Debate: Real Tools, Real Results

Final Thoughts: Can AI Ever Truly Think?
AI, like all technology, is part of an ongoing evolution. Rather than asking if AI "thinks," maybe the better question is: How can we use AI to enhance human thinking?
What do you think? Does AI’s pattern recognition qualify as "thinking," or is true reasoning still uniquely human?
